Indians sit all alone on top of 13-60 League

After three straight 13-60 League wins, the Waterville Indians amateur baseball team is now the top team in the league.

The biggest win among the three was a 6-4 victory over previously undefeated Minnesota Lake Sunday, June 26. Waterville also shutout Janesville, 2-0, Wednesday, June 22 and shutout Waseca, 9-0, Friday, June 24.

The Indians are the lone team in the league with an unblemished record, sitting at 11-0 in the 13-16 League and 13-3 overall. They have won 11 of their last 12 games. They tentatively have a Friday, July 1 game scheduled at Owatonna. Friday, July 8 they will play at 6 p.m. in Jordan against Red Wing. This is a three-day tourney.

In the win over Minnesota Lake Sunday, Nolan Grose got the Indians off to a good start with a two-run homer in the second inning, scoring his brother Dalton who singled with two outs.

The Royals scored a single run in the third and Waterville matched that run with a single run in the fourth inning. Luke Sellner walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Boran, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by D. Grose.

Ahead 3-1, Waterville tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to increase their lead to 6-1. Riley Schultz walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Stier, and scored on a Minnesota Lake error on a ball hit by Josh Cook in the fifth inning. In the sixth, D. Grose and N. Grose each singled with two outs. Schultz walked to load the bases. Stier was hit by a pitch which scored D. Grose. In the seventh, Cook singled and scored on a double by L. Sellner.

The Royals were not going away without a fight. They loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, collecting five straight singles and a walk off, plating three runs. After giving up a hit and a walk, reliever Bladyn Bartelt picked up a strike out and a ground out to end the inning. He set down the Minnesota Lake offense 1-2-3- in the ninth inning to earn the save for D. Grose.

D. Grose pitched the first 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked one.

The Grose brothers combined for five hits, three runs scored, and three RBI. Cook added two hits and Schultz walked twice.

Against Waseca, L. Sellner did not allow a hit in seven innings. He struck out five, walked two, and hit two batters. Jayson Schneider pitched final two innings. He allowed two hits, walked two, hit one, and struck out four.

Cook had two hits and four RBI. Ty Kaus, Schultz, L. Sellner, Ben Boran, D. Grose, and Isaac Turner each walked twice. N. Grose had a fantastic outing in the shutout over Janesville. He allowed seven hits, two walks, and struck out eight in pitching a complete game.

Boran had three hits, including a solo home run in the second inning. The second run was scored in the third inning on a single by L. Sellner, a passed ball and a double steal.
