Gordon “Grump” Greenwald, 79

Gordon “Grump” Greenwald, age 79, of Elysian, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, in Mankato, Minnesota with his beloved wife, Sharon, by his side. He was the son of Leroy and Grace (Rachel) Greenwald and a lifelong resident of the family home where he was born.

Grump graduated from Waterville High School in 1963 and dedicated his life to hard work, community service, and family. He worked alongside his father and brother in the family gravel business, where he earned his enduring nickname, “Grump.” Over six decades, he became a fixture in the community, plowing snow, hauling gravel, and hauling grain for local farmers. Whether operating a semi-truck, snowplow, or road grader, Grump’s skill and dedication were unmatched. He also served as a driver for school buses and the Shattuck boys’ hockey team, proudly traveling across the U.S. and Canada with them.

On July 8, 1972, he married Sharon, his wife of 52 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Nancy (Greg) Swedin and Rachel (Pam) Greenwald. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren - Lauren (Branden), RJ (Hà), Bryant, Eli, Izzy, Hazel, and Gordy - and a great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren.

Grump had a deep love for the outdoors and a zest for life. He enjoyed fishing trips, hunting adventures, camping outings, bowling nights, and lively card games. Renowned for his storytelling and playful sense of humor, he brought joy to all who knew him.

A celebration of his life was held on Thursday, February 6, at 11 a.m. at the Elysian United Methodist Church. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Elysian. A light lunch followed at the American Legion in Elysian. May his memory bring comfort to all who carry his stories in their hearts.
