Bucs track and field team looking to improve in the Gopher Conference

After finishing the 2021 season with seventh place finish in the Gopher Conference Meet, the WEM boys track and field team will return a number of athletes who should help them improve their placing in the conference.

The Bucs scored 49 points in last year’s conference meet, but finished only eight points out of fifth place. First-year head coach Jon McDonough feels his team has a good chance to improve on that mark.

“We are going to look to specialize our runners this year and earn as many points as possible,” McDonough said. “We haven’t scored very many points in the past but I think we can finish in the middle of the conference. I expect us to move up two or three places.

Leading this group will be seniors Michael Adams and Sam Rezac, junior Ethan Greenwald, and sophomores Evan Lange-Wenker, Jasper Morris, and Aric Williams.

Adams was a solid runner on the Grizzly cross country team last fall. Rezac is the team’s top discus thrower and has a chance to place at Sections. Greenwald will compete in the pole vault, triple jump, and sprints. Lange-Wenker was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection last year and will run in relays, high jump, and middle distance events. Morris will be the team’s top distance runner and should also help fill out a competitive 4 x 400-meter relay. Williams is new to the team and will provide speed in the sprint events and short relays.
