Buccaneers sit on top of Gopher Conference standings

Two Gopher Conference victories last week have lifted the WEM volleyball team into the top spots in the league.

The Bucs defeated Hayfield (25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18) Tuesday, Sept. 13 and came-from-behind to defeat Randolph (17-15, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15, and 15-12) Thursday, Sept. 15.

WEM is now 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference one of only three undefeated conference teams. Medford and Faribault BA each have a 2-0 record.

Grace Baker and Tianna Pope each served 100 percent in the four-set win over the Vikings. Baker also added a team-leading 14 set assists. Ashlyn Pelant had 13 set assists and five kills.

Claire Bohlen was the top hitter for the Bucs, leading the team with 51 attacks and 15 kills. Alayna Atherton finished with 13 kills before an injury took her out of the game.

Addison Condon had seven kills and Jordan Green had 11 digs and five kills. Josie Volkmann led the team with 15 set assists.

Bohlen put together a fantastic night against the Rockets in a match which Atherton did not play. The talented junior finished with 52 attacks and a season-high 23 kills. She also added five digs.

Green had career-high 13 kills and had 13 digs and six ace serves.

Pelant had 12 set assists, six kills, and four ace serves.

Baker had 19 set assists, 10 digs, and two ace serves.

Condon finished with 16 digs and five kills.

Volkmann had 16 digs to tie Condon for the team lead.

WEM will now play at Triton Thursday, Sept. 22 and play at Le Sueur-Henderson Tuesday, Sept. 27.
